Console: The VGM Band is a live V.G.M. (video game music) rock band based in Honolulu, Hawai'i, known for their high-energy concerts and dynamic stage presence. Blending nostalgia with raw musicianship, the band breathes new life into iconic soundtracks from the 8-bit to 32-bit eras, delivering powerful performances that resonate with both gamers and music lovers alike. With a passion for rearranging and reimagining classic VGM, Console continues to grow its fan base in Hawai'i and beyond, bringing retro gaming soundscapes to a modern audience.
Console was founded in March 2017 when guitarists Cullen and Brian connected through YouTube and bonded over their shared love of video game music. Brian had already incorporated VGM into performances with his previous metal band, Leviathan, but sought to explore it further. With Cullen's enthusiasm and the addition of longtime friend and keyboardist Eric, the trio began arranging and rehearsing material, laying the groundwork for what would become their debut album. As they built their lineup and repertoire, Console gained traction through open mics and showcase performances. By the time they secured a coveted spot at Kawaii Kon in 2019, their roster had expanded to include Andrew on drums, and Sam on bass, and soon thereafter Sean on violin.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes to the band. Founding member Cullen and drummer Andrew moved away, prompting Console to shift its focus toward independent recording and online performances via Twitch. This period saw the band producing 17 episodes of the "Chillin' at Proto Man Sam's" series and a special appearance on Bonus Stage Van's 10th episode. However, as time passed, key member Eric also relocated, leading to an uncertain future for the band.
Just when it seemed like Console might enter an indefinite hiatus, drummer Reece answered a long-standing Craigslist ad seeking VGM musicians. His arrival reignited the band's momentum, and with Brian's persistence, keyboardist Reika joined, completing the lineup once more. As Hawai'i emerged from pandemic restrictions in late 2021, Console reentered the live music scene, performing at DIY shows hosted by Kailua Music School. These smaller gigs helped them refine their sound in preparation for bigger opportunities.
In 2022, Console returned to Kawaii Kon, performing before the convention's closing event to an audience of hundreds. This would be the final performance for bassist "Proto Man Sam," who, like several members before him, eventually moved away. Soon after, Brian's former bandmate Mikey joined on bass, bringing renewed energy to the group. With their momentum surging, Console appeared on KTUH radio and performed at various events as the world reopened to live entertainment.
On February 24, 2024, the band released its debut album, "Press Start," marking a major milestone in their journey. Amid further lineup changes, including Mikey's departure and Peter stepping in as bassist, Console continued to evolve. Expanding their reach, the band collaborated with The Ukus and Tsun-Hui, played shows on Maui and Kauai, and explored "unplugged" acoustic adaptations of their repertoire, diversifying their sound while staying true to their VGM roots.
Now, with a solid lineup and an ever-growing fan base, Console: The VGM Band remains dedicated to celebrating the music of video games through electrifying live performances, innovative arrangements, and a deep appreciation for gaming culture. With new projects on the horizon, the band looks forward to continuing their quest to bring video game music to life.
